Course Descriptions/Curriculum:
General Band - a traditional band/orchestra class for students who have never played a band instrument before. Students learn the basics of instrument care as well as notation reading, scales, dynamics and performance techniques.
Concert Band- a traditional band class for students who are proficient on a traditional band/orchestral instrument. Students delve further into mastery of their chosen instrument. Focus on ensemble technique, scale study, sight reading, conducting skills, solo performance opportunities and performing works of music at higher ability levels varying in difficulty. Each year, this group attends adjudicated festivals to compete for a score. Students have the opportunity to audition for RI All State and participate in Solo and Ensemble.
Chorus - a classically based chorus class for students who are interested in singing in a group. Focus on vocal pedagogy, notation reading, sight reading and ear training, and performing in multiple part harmony, varying in difficulty based upon level. Each year, this group attends adjudicated festivals to compete for a score. Students have the opportunity to audition for RI All State and participate in Solo and Ensemble.
Instrument/Piano - a self guided piano course that allows students to progress at their own pace on an individual keyboard, focusing on notation reading, independent playing with both hands and basic piano proficiency.
Instrument/Guitar - basic guitar taught in an ensemble setting, focusing on basic chords, melodies and improvisation. Students can select from a variety of guitars, including nylon string acoustic, steel string acoustic, electric guitar, bass guitar and ukulele.
NEW! Music Production - a project-oriented course designed for students in their 3rd or 4th year of the music pathway that focuses on the fundamental elements of recording, producing and marketing original music in the modern age.
AP Music Theory - college-level instruction in the elements of music including melody, harmony, rhythm, chord structure, conducting and basic composition, culminating in the AP Music exam.
